US Calls for Inquiry into Suspected Election Rigging in Pakistan
Concerns Raised by the US State Department
Washington, February 15: In response to the Pakistan general election results on February 8, the United States Department of State is urging a thorough investigation into allegations of rigging. During a press briefing, US State Department spokesperson Mathew Miller emphasized the need for addressing irregularities not only in Pakistan but worldwide.
Timely Completion of Vote Count and Declaration of Results
Miller expressed the US’s desire for the timely completion of the vote count and declaration of results. He highlighted concerns about “undue restrictions” on freedoms of expression, association, and peaceful assembly during the polling process, indicating a commitment to promoting fairness and transparency in electoral processes.
Nomination of Key Positions by PML-N Supremo Nawaz Sharif
Meanwhile, Nawaz Sharif of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has nominated his brother, Shehbaz Sharif, for the position of Pakistan Prime Minister. Maryam Nawaz has been nominated for the post of Punjab Chief Minister. This move comes amid the ongoing scrutiny of the election results and reinforces the PML-N’s commitment to participating in the democratic process.
Challenges Faced During General Elections
The general elections in Pakistan, held amidst allegations of rigging and the shutdown of communication services, have faced significant challenges. The voting process itself was marred by accusations of irregularities and restrictions on voters. The Federal Interior Ministry’s suspension of mobile phone and internet services across Pakistan drew criticism from major political parties, raising concerns about the impact on the electoral process and the overall democratic environment.
