Investors React to Earnings Decline: United Spirits Shares Tumble Post Q2 Earnings Release
The share price of United Spirits witnessed a significant drop in early trading on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) on November 10. The dive in share value, nearly 7%, was a direct response to the company’s reported decline in both revenue and profit for the September quarter. The standalone revenue saw a near 19% year-on-year drop, triggering investor concern and a sell-off.
Earnings Report Highlights
United Spirits disclosed a sharp decline in its revenue from operations, which stood at ₹6,733.8 crore, a stark contrast to the ₹8,275.9 crore reported in the same quarter the previous year. The company’s profit followed suit, with a 37% fall year-on-year, from ₹542.3 crore to ₹341.3 crore. This financial performance has evidently left investors wary, reflected in the falling stock price.
Brokerage Houses Provide Mixed Insights
In the wake of these results, Kotak Institutional Equities recommends an “add” status with a target price adjustment to ₹1,075, considering the estimated revenue and earnings per share (EPS). Conversely, Motilal Oswal Financial Services maintains a “neutral” stance, with its target price set at ₹1,050. The brokerage has adjusted its EPS estimates based on anticipated EBITDA margin gains, despite acknowledging challenges such as cost inflation and pressure on certain product categories.
Outlook and Market Position
Amidst a challenging economic environment marked by inflation and consumer pressure, United Spirits has exhibited a strained growth trajectory compared to other companies in the discretionary sector, which have generally achieved double-digit growth. This has led to a cautious approach from investors and analysts alike, as the company navigates a period of reduced earnings and market volatility.
