UN Special Rapporteur Condemns Lack of Accountability for Afghan War Crimes
Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur for Afghanistan, strongly condemned the persisting lack of accountability regarding war crimes, crimes against humanity, and human rights violations in Afghanistan during a conference on ‘Accountability for Crimes Committed in Afghanistan’ held in New York.
Bennett emphasized that Afghanistan has been entrenched in a cycle of impunity for decades, witnessing violations of human rights and international humanitarian law without adequate repercussions.
He stressed the fundamental importance of accountability, citing it as the cornerstone of the human rights system.
During the conference, Anna Myriam Roccatello from the International Centre for Transitional Justice (ICTJ) underscored the significance of member states, particularly those involved in various stages of the Afghan conflict, initiating cases against their own citizens.
The representative of Norway emphasized the need for Afghan women’s active participation in meetings related to Afghanistan.
Addressing the conference, the Norwegian ambassador highlighted the importance of creating a platform for Afghan women to voice their concerns openly, stressing that their involvement is pivotal for shaping the future of their country.
Contrarily, the Taliban spokesperson, Zabihullah Mujahid, accused the US and its allies of being the primary perpetrators of war crimes during the two-decade American occupation in Afghanistan, deflecting attention from their own alleged transgressions.
Previously, Amnesty International called for an investigation into war crimes committed in Afghanistan before 2021, urging the International Criminal Court (ICC) to review cases involving the Taliban.
The divergent viewpoints expressed during the conference underscored the ongoing complexities and challenges in seeking justice and accountability for war crimes and human rights violations in Afghanistan.
