Ukraine under fire from Russian missiles after sinking warship
Ukraine faced a barrage of missile attacks from Russia on Friday, targeting several cities including the capital Kyiv. The strikes triggered a nationwide air alert and caused damage and fires in some areas. The assault came days after Ukraine claimed to have sunk a Russian landing ship in the occupied Crimean port of Feodosia, a blow to the Russian navy.
The Ukrainian air force said it used guided missiles to destroy the Novocherkassk vessel, which President Volodymyr Zelensky mocked as joining “the Russian underwater Black Sea fleet”.
Russia confirmed the damage to the ship and said it was reported to President Vladimir Putin by Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu. Kyiv’s mayor Vitali Klitschko said explosions were heard in the city and urged residents to stay calm.
Missiles also hit Kharkiv, Lviv, Odesa, Sumy and Konotop, according to local authorities and police. In Odesa, a high-rise building was set on fire by debris from a downed drone, but the blaze was quickly put out.
Zelensky thanked the United States for providing $250 million in military aid to Ukraine, which is locked in a war with Russian-backed separatists in the east.
He said the US support was vital to defend freedom and security in the face of Russian aggression.
