Ukraine and Russia Report Six Fatalities in Attacks, Marks Ukraine-Russia Conflict’s Two-Year Anniversary
The enduring conflict between Kyiv and Moscow, approaching its two-year mark, witnessed a recent deadly escalation, with Russia and Ukraine reporting six fatalities due to shelling, as per Al Jazeera.
Ukrainian officials revealed that Russian attacks in Kherson killed five, while Russian authorities claimed one person died following Ukrainian shelling in the Russian-occupied Horlivka town.
Tragically, an 87-year-old man and his 81-year-old wife lost their lives when their apartment block in Kherson City was hit by shelling on Sunday, as reported by Al Jazeera citing Ukrainian sources.
Andriy Yermak, head of the Ukrainian president’s office, emphasized that despite the approaching holiday season, there’s no respite while the enemy continues to inflict harm and occupy their land.
This recent assault occurred as Ukraine geared up to celebrate Christmas on December 25 for the first time, having shifted the date from January 7, previously aligned with the Russian Orthodox Church’s schedule, stated Al Jazeera. Kherson, vacated by Russian forces over a year ago, has faced repeated shelling incidents.
In a Christmas Eve address, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy assured the Ukrainian people in their struggle against Russia, stating that each day brings them closer to defeating the darkness.
Zelenskyy rallied unity, expressing their collective aspirations for freedom, victory, and the nation’s prosperity.
Allegedly, Ukrainian shelling in Horlivka claimed the life of one woman and injured six, according to Ivan Prikhodko, the Russian-appointed mayor, communicating via the Telegram app. Prikhodko added that the attack also resulted in the destruction of a shopping center and several other buildings in the area.
The ongoing conflict has left a trail of devastation, escalating tensions and inflicting casualties on both sides, underscoring the urgency for a peaceful resolution amid continued violence and loss of lives.
