UGC Invalidates MPhil Degree, Directs Universities to Halt Admissions for 2023-24 Academic Year
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has officially invalidated the MPhil degree, cautioning universities to discontinue MPhil admissions as per Clause 14 of the Commission. In a notification issued by Secretary Manish Joshi, concerns were raised regarding certain universities actively soliciting new applications for the Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) program.
The notification emphasizes that the M.Phil. degree lacks recognition, referencing Regulation No. 14 of the UGC Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations 2022. This regulation explicitly prohibits Higher Educational Institutions from offering M.Phil. programs.
The UGC Secretary highlighted the formulation of the University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2022, published in the Gazette of India on November 7, 2022.
In light of this, the notification urges university authorities to promptly cease admissions to the M.Phil. program for the academic year 2023-24. Furthermore, students are advised against seeking admission to the M.Phil. program.
This decision follows the Commission’s earlier announcement that MPhil degree courses across all universities would no longer be considered valid, instructing higher educational institutions not to offer MPhil programs.
All university authorities in states and Union Territories (UTs) are instructed to take immediate measures to halt admissions to the MPhil program for the academic year 2023-24.
