UDF Workers Lay Siege to Thiruvananthapuram Secretariat Over Corruption Allegations
UDF Launches Mass Protest in Thiruvananthapuram
In a massive demonstration against the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government in Kerala, hundreds of workers and leaders from the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) converged on the state’s secretariat building in Thiruvananthapuram. This protest, led by the Deputy leader of the opposition and IUML leader PK Kunhalikutty, and senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala, among others, aimed to highlight allegations of corruption and financial mismanagement against the LDF government.
A Stand Against Corruption and Financial Mismanagement
The UDF constituents, including the Congress, IUML, RSP, and various Kerala Congress factions, began assembling in front of the secretariat building as early as 6 a.m. They effectively blocked three out of the four entry gates, allowing only the Cantonment gate to remain open for ministers and bureaucrats to access the government building. The protest seeks to draw attention to the alleged financial turmoil created by the LDF government and the corruption allegations it faces.
Demanding Justice for School Headmasters and Teachers
Leader of Opposition VD Satheesan criticized the Left Front government for failing to pay arrears owed to school headmasters and teachers participating in the midday meal scheme. Despite the government’s claims of financial constraints, Satheesan highlighted what he considered extravagant spending by government officials while teachers and headmasters struggle to provide meals for schoolchildren. He noted that teachers have been using their own salaries to cover the costs of midday meals.
A Prelude to the UDF Campaign
This protest not only serves as a strong message against the LDF government but also signals the beginning of the UDF’s campaign in preparation for the upcoming parliamentary elections. As UDF workers and leaders gathered for the protest, traffic disruptions in Thiruvananthapuram inconvenienced morning commuters. To manage the situation, traffic in areas surrounding the secretariat was rerouted, and police personnel were deployed at critical intersections.
