U.S. Launches Domestic H-1B Visa Renewal Program
In a significant development for Indian technology professionals in the United States, the U.S. State Department has announced a pilot program for domestic renewal of certain categories of H-1B visas. Set to begin in December, this initiative is expected to benefit a large number of Indian nationals working in the U.S.
Easing Visa Renewal Process for Indian Nationals
Julie Stufft, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Visa Services, highlighted the high demand for U.S. visas in India, noting the extensive wait times currently experienced by applicants. To address this, the State Department will issue 20,000 visas over three months, primarily to Indian nationals residing in the U.S. This move aims to prevent the need for travel to India or other countries for visa renewals, allowing U.S. missions in India to focus more on new applicants. The pilot program was first announced during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit in June and later during his address to the Indian diaspora in the U.S.
Impact and Future Prospects
The program, described as a “huge undertaking” by Stufft, is set to start small with 20,000 cases and expand to more categories of workers living in the U.S. throughout 2024. Indian-American community leader Ajay Jain Bhutoria praised the initiative, highlighting its potential impact on over one million H-1B holders, many of whom are Indians. This development is seen as a move towards inclusiveness, reflecting positive changes in immigration policies.
