Terrorists Open Fire on Police Officer in Srinagar; Area Under Cordon
A shocking incident unfolded in Srinagar’s Eidgah area as terrorists targeted a police officer. Inspector Masroor Wani, who was present at Eidgah grounds in the downtown area, was shot at point-blank range. The attackers used a police pistol in the assault. The injured officer has been promptly transported to a hospital, while the area has been cordoned off to facilitate the tracking of the assailants.
Kashmir Zone Police Launches Investigation
The Kashmir Zone Police provided an official statement regarding the incident, stating, “Terrorists fired upon and injured Inspector Masroor Ahmad near Eidgah, Srinagar. He was immediately shifted to the hospital for treatment. Preliminary investigation reveals that a pistol was used in this terror crime. Area cordoned off, case registered.”
Officer Attacked While Playing Cricket with Locals
According to reports from the Press Trust of India, Inspector Masroor Wani was engaged in a game of cricket with local boys at an Eidgah ground when he was targeted by terrorists. His condition is reported to be critical, underlining the grave nature of the attack.
Ceasefire Violation and Rising Concerns
This incident follows a recent ceasefire violation along the international border between India and Pakistan, marking a significant breach in the ceasefire understanding established in February 2021. A Border Security Force (BSF) personnel was injured in unprovoked firing and mortar shelling in the Arnia sector along the border. The violence has led to numerous villagers fleeing their homes as mortar shells struck residential areas.
Concerns Over Foreign Terrorists in Kashmir
High-level discussions were held at the headquarters of the 15 Corps in Srinagar to address the escalating role of foreign terrorists in the region. Official figures reveal that out of the 46 terrorists killed in Jammu and Kashmir this year, 37 were of Pakistani origin, with only nine being locals. This marks the first time in the 33-year history of terrorism in the Union Territory that the number of foreign terrorists killed is four times higher than the number of local terrorists.
The Ministry of Home Affairs estimates that about 130 terrorists are currently operating in the Valley, with roughly half of them being foreign terrorists.
