Kashmir’s Children Embrace a New Future
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha of Jammu and Kashmir recently declared that the terror ecosystem in the region, which had been brainwashing children and putting stones in their hands, has been effectively dismantled. He made these remarks during a two-day workshop focused on strengthening child protection systems and mechanisms in the region.
A Childhood Denied
Addressing the workshop at SKICC, Srinagar, LG Manoj Sinha expressed regret that for many decades, the children of Kashmir had been denied the childhood they deserved. Conflict profiteers had manipulated and influenced them, involving them in acts of violence. However, the region has successfully eradicated this harmful ecosystem, and today, Kashmiri children are equipped with laptops and tablets, actively contributing to the nation’s development.
Crackdown on Conflict Profiteers
The Lieutenant Governor emphasized that the administration is taking a tough stance against those who profit from conflict and the manipulation of young minds. He assured that no one involved in these activities would be spared.
Empowering Children’s Futures
LG Manoj Sinha highlighted the administration’s commitment to providing laptops to children and shaping their futures. Since August 2019, laws related to child protection have been extended to Jammu and Kashmir, including the reformation of the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) and the establishment of a rehabilitation policy for children. The focus is on creating institutional care environments that offer children a homely atmosphere. The administration is dedicated to eradicating child begging and child labor from the streets of Jammu and Kashmir.
Combatting Adolescent Drug Abuse
Addressing the issue of adolescent drug abuse, LG Sinha called on public representatives, NGOs, community leaders, religious figures, and youth organizations to join the fight against this menace. The administration has adopted a zero-tolerance policy against drugs and seeks to raise awareness and strengthen actions to achieve a drug-free Jammu and Kashmir.
Promoting Family-Based Care
The government has initiated several rehabilitation and child care programs, including adoption efforts led by the Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA) and the State Adoption Resource Agency (SARA) to promote family-based, non-institutional care for children. The LG emphasized the importance of providing homes for children living in institutional care and street situations, stating that institutional care should be the last resort.
The workshop was attended by various stakeholders, including PRIs and ULB members, police officials, resource persons, representatives of the Juvenile Justice Board, judiciary, NGOs, and more.
