Tamil Nadu Political Landscape Seeks Single-Phase Lok Sabha Elections
In a significant development, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar revealed that a majority of political parties in Tamil Nadu are advocating for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections to be conducted in a single phase in the state. Kumar, concluding his two-day visit to Tamil Nadu to assess poll preparedness, emphasized the Election Commission’s commitment to ensuring a level playing field for all parties, warning of stringent action against officials displaying bias.
Political Parties Unite Against Money Power and Irregularities
During a press briefing, Kumar highlighted the concerns raised by political parties, emphasizing their collective push for single-phase polling. The parties also expressed a strong desire to curb the influence of money power during elections and called for the disqualification of candidates engaged in distributing cash or any form of inducement. Process-wise, parties stressed the need for bureaucratic impartiality, demanding a fair and equal treatment of every candidate.
Equal Footing for Poll Rallies and Enhanced Booth Security
Political parties demanded that permissions for poll rallies be granted on an ‘equal footing,’ without discrimination. Additionally, they urged the deployment of CCTV cameras in the most sensitive booths and called for robust action against impersonation during voting. Chief Electoral Officer Satyabrata Sahoo joined Kumar in addressing these crucial issues, underscoring the significance of creating a transparent and secure electoral process.
Tamil Nadu’s Electorate: Statistics and Mobilization Efforts
Highlighting the demographic composition of Tamil Nadu’s electorate, Kumar shared that the state is home to 6.19 crore voters, including 3.15 crore women and 3.04 crore men. In a lighthearted remark, he urged women to surpass male voters in turnout. The state also has 8,294 transgender voters and 4.22 lakh persons with disabilities. Kumar emphasized the Election Commission’s commitment to ensuring the active participation of all demographics in the electoral process.
Tech-Driven Vigilance: cVIGIL App to Combat Electoral Malpractices
In the fight against the distribution of money and liquor to voters, Kumar introduced the cVIGIL (Citizens Be Vigilant) mobile app. This innovative tool allows users to capture incidents like money distribution through photos. Kumar assured that the EC would take action within 100 minutes of receiving and verifying a complaint. The app utilizes latitude and longitude data to dispatch Surveillance Teams promptly, ensuring swift and effective responses to reported electoral malpractices.
