Tamil Nadu CM Advocates for Chief Ministers as Chancellors of Universities
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, while speaking at the convocation ceremony of the ‘Tamil Nadu Doctor J Jayalalitha Music and Fine Arts University’, advocated for state chief ministers to assume the role of university chancellors. He emphasized that this would aid in the development of universities.
Appreciation for Late CM Jayalalitha’s Decision
Stalin lauded the late Chief Minister Jayalalitha for her decision to make the State Chief Minister the chancellor of the university. He underscored the uniqueness of this university in India, dedicated specifically to music and fully funded by the state.
Concerns Over Chancellorship
The Chief Minister expressed concerns that if the chancellor’s role were handled by others, the objectives of universities might be compromised. He appreciated Jayalalitha’s foresight in understanding the current situation and making such a decision.
Legal Dispute with Governor
Earlier this month, the Tamil Nadu government approached the Supreme Court against Governor RN Ravi, accusing him of violating laws in appointing vice chancellors to various universities. The state government contends that the Governor’s actions in reconstituting search committees for these appointments are contrary to state laws.
