Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vows to Overturn NEET, Citing Threat to State’s Medical Infrastructure
MK Stalin’s Strong Stance Against NEET
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has taken a firm stand against the National Entrance-cum-Eligibility Test (NEET), asserting that the medical entrance exam was “imposed” on Tamil Nadu, detrimentally affecting the state’s medical infrastructure. Addressing the fourth state conference of the Doctors’ Association for Equality (DASE), Stalin recalled the tragic instances of medical aspirants committing suicide, allegedly due to the stress and pressure associated with NEET. He emphasized the state’s commitment to legally battling for NEET exemption.
Public Support and Movement Against NEET
The Chief Minister highlighted that the anti-NEET sentiment has evolved into a people’s movement, spurred by a signature campaign initiated by the DMK’s youth wing, student wing, and medical wing. Stalin reiterated his belief that the exemption from NEET, despite being deemed unattainable by some, is achievable through public support and concerted efforts.
Tamil Nadu’s Legislative Efforts for NEET Exemption
The Tamil Nadu government has consistently taken legislative steps to seek exemption from NEET, underscoring that the central qualifying test contradicts the principles of social justice. The state assembly has passed multiple resolutions in this regard, reflecting the widespread opposition to NEET within the state. Additionally, MK Stalin credited his father and former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi for establishing a strong health and medical infrastructure in Tamil Nadu under previous DMK governments, which he believes is threatened by the imposition of NEET.
