Taiwan Initiates TAIDE Project: A Defensive Move Against Chinese Influence in AI
In response to the threat of Chinese influence through online technologies, Taiwan is set to invest significantly in creating its own extensive language model AI tool, comparable to ChatGPT. The project, named “TAIDE” (Trustworthy AI Dialogue Engine), aims to counterbalance the impact of Chinese-developed chatbot programs like “Ernie Bot” from Baidu. With a potential investment of up to New Taiwan Dollar 17.4 billion (USD 556 million) by 2026, including New Taiwan Dollar 230 million (USD 7.4 million) earmarked specifically for TAIDE’s development, Taiwan is taking proactive steps to strengthen its capabilities in AI research.
Concerns Over Chinese Digital Influence Prompt TAIDE Development
As the Chinese chatbot program “Ernie Bot” gained attention, concerns over potential Chinese infiltration and influence on digital platforms intensified. Recent incidents, such as the chatbot’s response to questions about the Taiwan election, raised alarms about the risk of misinformation and propaganda. To address these concerns, Taiwan’s TAIDE project aims to create a trustworthy AI dialogue engine, serving as a defensive mechanism against potential Chinese influence in the digital landscape.
Taipei’s Strategic Move to Safeguard Against Misinformation
With the rising popularity of Chinese-developed apps like TikTok among the younger demographic, Taiwan recognizes the importance of safeguarding against misinformation and propaganda. Taipei believes that investing in local AI tools, equipped with advanced technologies, will act as a deterrent and countermeasure against potential infiltration attempts by Chinese entities on various internet platforms. In the evolving landscape of AI technologies, TAIDE represents Taiwan’s strategic initiative to bolster its defenses and maintain control over its digital narrative.
