Swati Maliwal Resigns as DCW Chief, Nominated for Rajya Sabha Candidacy by AAP
Swati Maliwal, renowned for her tireless advocacy for women’s rights, stepped down from her position as the chief of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) after being nominated as a candidate by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections.
Sharing a heartfelt video on X and citing the famous Bollywood song ‘Kabhi Kabhie’, Maliwal expressed her emotions, saying, “Pal do pal meri kahani hai (My story will last only for a moment or two).” She bid farewell to her eight-year tenure at the Delhi Women’s Commission, highlighting the dedication she devoted daily for the welfare of Delhi and the nation, mentioning both the challenges and successes she encountered during her tenure.
The AAP’s Political Affairs Committee (PAC) finalized its nominations for the impending Rajya Sabha elections, nominating Maliwal for her debut in parliamentary affairs. Additionally, the committee renominated ND Gupta and incarcerated leader Sanjay Singh for their second term in the Upper House of Parliament.
Chaired by AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal, the committee decided to retain two existing members for re-nomination, while Sushil Kumar Gupta expressed his intent to shift his focus to electoral politics in Haryana, where elections are expected later this year.
As the six-year term of three current Rajya Sabha MPs from Delhi concludes this month, the voting to elect new members is scheduled for January 19. The retiring members include Sanjay Singh, Sushil Kumar Gupta, and Narain Dass Gupta on January 27.
Swati Maliwal, known for her activism and work combating violence against women, promoting gender equality, and advocating for stringent laws, has a rich history as a women’s rights activist. She previously served as an advisor to the Chief Minister of Delhi on public grievances and was a core member of the Indian Against Corruption movement.
Meanwhile, a Delhi court permitted Sanjay Singh, an AAP leader, to sign re-nomination documents from jail. Singh, embroiled in a money laundering case related to the Excise policy, was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on October 4, 2023. Despite his bail plea being dismissed, the Court’s view asserted reasonable grounds for his alleged involvement in the money laundering offense.
