Supreme Court to Hear Delhi Government’s Plea on Release of Delhi Jal Board Funds
The Supreme Court has agreed to consider the Delhi Government’s plea regarding the release of funds for the Delhi Jal Board on April 1. Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing the Delhi Government, emphasized the urgency of the matter before a bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud.
Urgent Appeal for Release of Funds
Singhvi informed the court that the funds allocated to the Jal Board have not been released and are set to lapse on March 31. Expressing concern over the impending lapse, the Delhi Government seeks prompt intervention to address the issue.
Assurance of Prompt Action
Assuring swift action, the Supreme Court assured that it would hear the matter on April 1. The court emphasized its readiness to reverse any decision if necessary, ensuring that any developments between the current date and the day of the hearing would be addressed.
Background of the Issue
The urgency of releasing the Jal Board funds has been highlighted previously, with Delhi Minister Atishi raising concerns about a potential public health crisis due to the non-release of funds. In November 2023, a letter was addressed to Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, urging suspension and disciplinary action against the Finance Secretary for halting the funds.
As the matter heads to the Supreme Court for deliberation, the focus remains on resolving the funding issue to mitigate any adverse impact on public health and essential services in Delhi.
