Supreme Court Extends Satyendar Jain’s Interim Bail in Money Laundering Case

In a recent development, the Supreme Court has granted an extension of interim bail on medical grounds to senior Aam Aadmi Party leader and former Delhi minister Satyendar Jain. The interim bail has been extended until October 18 in connection with an alleged money laundering case. The matter was heard by a bench comprising Justice AS Bopanna and Bela M Trivedi, who scheduled the next hearing for October 18.

Interim Bail Extended for Medical Reasons

Satyendar Jain had undergone surgery on July 21, and since then, his interim bail on medical grounds has been periodically extended. Earlier, on May 26, the Supreme Court had granted him interim bail for a period of six weeks in the money laundering case, accompanied by several conditions. These conditions included restrictions on speaking to the media and leaving Delhi without permission. The court had also granted him the choice to select a hospital of his preference for medical treatment, emphasizing the consideration of interim bail in medical conditions.

Jain’s lawyer had informed the Supreme Court about his severe health deterioration, with the politician losing 35 kg and experiencing a significant decline in his overall health.

Legal Challenges and Previous Dismissals

Satyendar Jain has been challenging the Delhi High Court’s dismissal of his bail application in the money laundering case. The High Court had declined his bail plea on April 6, 2023, citing his influence and the potential risk of tampering with evidence. The High Court’s order came after multiple hearings, with the Additional Solicitor General (ASG) SV Raju, representing the Enforcement Directorate, strongly contending the money laundering charges against Jain and other co-accused.

The case against Satyendar Jain and others is based on a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) complaint, alleging that Jain had acquired movable properties in the names of various individuals from February 14, 2015, to May 31, 2017, without providing a satisfactory account of the sources of these assets. Jain was arrested on May 30, 2022, under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) by the Enforcement Directorate and has since been in judicial custody.

The Supreme Court’s decision to extend interim bail will continue to be an important development in the ongoing legal proceedings concerning Satyendar Jain’s case.
