Supreme Court Clears Way for WFI Elections
The Supreme Court has recently made a crucial decision to lift the stay imposed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court on the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) elections. The bench, consisting of Justices Abhay S Oka and Pankaj Mithal, questioned the High Court’s rationale for suspending the entire election process and suggested that the elections should have been allowed to proceed, subject to the outcome of the pending writ petition by the Haryana Wrestling Association.
Resumption of Election Process
With the Supreme Court’s directive, the stay on the WFI elections has been set aside, paving the way for the resumption of the election process under a revised schedule. However, the bench clarified that the election results would be subject to the decisions made in the pending writ petition.
Context of the Legal Dispute
The legal dispute originated from the ad-hoc committee’s challenge to the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s order, dated September 25, which had halted the elections. The Supreme Court had previously refrained from intervening in the High Court’s decision in late August. Further complications arose due to the international suspension of WFI by United World Wrestling over delayed elections, and the Indian Olympic Association-appointed ad-hoc committee’s rescheduling of the elections from July 6 to July 11, following concerns raised by some state bodies.
Additional Legal Challenges
The WFI’s election process encountered more obstacles as the Gauhati High Court stayed the elections based on a petition from the Assam Wrestling Association demanding participation rights. This series of legal impediments effectively put the WFI’s electoral activities on hold until the Supreme Court’s recent ruling.
