Study Reveals The Best And Worst States For Education In The US
New research ranks New York as the top state for education quality, while Arizona falls to the bottom.
Key Findings:
Comprehensive new study evaluates education quality across all 50 US states based on eight weighted factors including graduation rates, test scores, funding, and safety
Northeast states dominate the top rankings with New York, Massachusetts, and New Jersey securing the top three positions.
Education expert explains that higher per-student spending and lower student-to-teacher ratios are common factors among top-performing states.
When it comes to education in America, your zip code matters – a lot. As millions of students don caps and gowns this graduation season, the stark reality is that the quality of education they’ve received depends heavily on which state they call home.
To shed light on these educational disparities, Silicon Valley High School, an accredited online institution offering self-paced courses for high school students, homeschoolers, and adults, analyzed data from all 50 states to determine which are providing students with the best educational opportunities and which are falling behind. The study comes at a critical time when schools nationwide face challenges ranging from teacher shortages to budget constraints.
“What we’re seeing isn’t just a gap between states – it’s an opportunity gap for millions of American students,” says David Smith, CEO of Silicon Valley High School. “Some states have created educational environments where students consistently thrive, while others struggle with systemic challenges that hold students back from reaching their full potential.”

The Study
The research team developed a comprehensive Education Quality Score by examining eight factors central to educational success. These included graduation rates, standardized test performances, state funding levels, classroom sizes, college education rates, school safety metrics, and early childhood participation.
To create the final rankings, factors were weighted based on their impact on overall education quality. School safety (which considered bullying incidents, youth drug use rates, and school shootings), per-student spending, graduation rates, and student-teacher ratios each accounted for 15% of the total score. Test scores (both SAT and ACT), bachelor’s degree attainment rates, and early childhood enrollment each contributed 10% to the final score.
The Northeast region clearly dominates America’s education landscape, claiming all of the top five spots and seven of the top ten overall. This regional excellence reflects decades of strategic investment and prioritization of education.
New York tops the list with an impressive score of 80.66, combining high graduation rates of 87% with substantial investment of $33,437 per student – more than triple what the lowest-ranked states spend. This financial commitment allows for favorable student-teacher ratios of 11.7:1, giving students more individualized attention.
Massachusetts follows closely with 80.33, boasting the highest SAT scores (1109) and ACT scores (26.1) among top states, along with an exceptional 90% graduation rate. The state also leads in higher education, with 47.8% of residents holding bachelor’s degrees.
New Jersey rounds out the top three with 76.56, standing out with the best safety score (85.03) and high early childhood enrollment (73.8%). This early commitment to education creates a strong foundation for later academic success.
“The top-performing states share a clear pattern; they invest heavily in their students and maintain smaller class sizes,” says David Smith. “When you spend over $25,000 per student and keep student-teacher ratios below 12:1, you’re creating an environment where individualized learning can happen naturally.”
