The Kashmir Valley continues to experience a persistent dry spell, intensifying the night chill, as Srinagar recorded a low of minus 5.2 degrees Celsius.

The local weather forecast indicates predominantly dry conditions until January 7, with a potential for light snow in isolated extreme higher reaches between January 4-5.

As the Chillai-Kalan, the 40-day harshest winter period, persists, temperatures remain below freezing. Srinagar marked a dip in the minimum temperature on Monday, with Pahalgam recording the coldest temperature at minus 5.7 degrees Celsius. Kupwara in north Kashmir also experienced a drop, reaching minus 4.5 degrees Celsius.

In Gulmarg, a renowned ski resort, the temperature dropped to minus 3.4 degrees Celsius. Qazigund and Kokernag areas in South Kashmir witnessed temperatures at minus 3.6 degrees Celsius and minus 1.7 degrees Celsius, respectively.

According to Mukhtar Ahmad, Director of the Meteorological Department, the forecast predicts mainly dry weather until January 3rd, followed by generally cloudy conditions between January 4-5.

This period might see very light snow over isolated extreme higher reaches. From January 6-7, the weather is expected to remain mainly dry, without any significant weather activity anticipated until January 7th.
