South Africa Highway Crash Kills 21, Four Seriously Injured

WESTERN CAPE, September 14, 2026 [VoM News]: At least 21 people were killed and four others seriously injured after two minibus taxis crashed head-on, and a third collided with them on a Western Cape highway, authorities said Monday.

The incident happened on Sunday night on the N1 highway between Prince Albert and Leeu-Gamka, about 380 kilometres east of Cape Town, the Road Traffic Management Corporation said.

The Western Cape Mobility Department said the crash appeared to have started after the two minibus taxis crashed head-on, followed by an SUV colliding with the wreckage.

Four victims were rushed to hospital, but were declared dead on arrival, police said.

The N1 highway was closed at the crash site as emergency teams and authorities responded. The death toll could still increase as officials continued to evaluate the scene, the Road Traffic Management Corporation said.

\ An investigation has been launched to establish the cause of the crash. Minibus taxis are a popular form of public transport in South Africa and are often involved in fatal road crashes.
