Enforcement Directorate Moves Supreme Court Against Quashing of Money Laundering Case Against NewsClick

Enforcement Directorate Moves Supreme Court Against Quashing of Money Laundering Case Against NewsClick

NEW DELHI, October 25, 2026, [VoM News]: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has now approached the Supreme Court challenging a Delhi High Court order that quashed a money laundering case against news portal NewsClick, its editor-in-chief Prabir Purkayastha and others over alleged violations of foreign investment rules, as per VoM News sources.

As per information available with VoM News, agency in its petition argued that the High Court quashed its Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) without examining the money laundering case.

The concerns were raised over a delay of five months in the pronouncement of the judgment.

Though, the matter is yet to be listed for hearing.

Earlier, on May 29, the High Court had quashed both a 2020 FIR registered by the Delhi Police’s Economic Offences Wing (EOW) and the related ECIR filed by the ED.

The FIR alleged that PPK Newsclick Studio Pvt Ltd, NewsClick’s parent company, received Rs 9.59 crore in foreign direct investment from US-based Worldwide Media Holdings LLC during 2018-19 in violation of applicable rules.

Investigators alleged that shares were overvalued to bypass restrictions and that part of the funds was diverted towards salaries, consultancy fees and rent.

The company sought quashing of the FIR, arguing that the allegations were vague.

The High Court held that the investment did not establish a criminal offence and noted that the government had indicated there was no applicable FDI cap for digital media at the relevant time.

Alos, it also found insufficient material to substantiate allegations of cheating, criminal breach of trust or money laundering, observing that extensive investigations had failed to produce incriminating evidence on record.
