Smriti Irani Takes Swipe at Rahul Gandhi, Discusses Political Landscape
In a recent statement, Union Minister Smriti Irani criticized Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, describing him as the “political master” of his party and attributing his defeat in Amethi to “arrogance.” Irani, who is the Union Minister of Women and Child Development, made these comments during the Manorama News Conclave 2023. She stated that Rahul Gandhi’s overconfidence led to the loss of a seat in Amethi, which the Congress had held for over four decades.
Political Differences and Decadal Shifts
Irani highlighted the political differences between being a political master and a political worker, emphasizing that her role is that of a political ‘karyakarta’ (worker) for the BJP. She pointed out that Congress had over four lakh votes in Amethi in 2019, which they had maintained as a family stronghold for close to four decades. However, this number had dwindled to 1.2 lakh votes by the time she had been an MP in the constituency for four-and-a-half years. Irani asserted that it takes time, but BJP karyakartas eventually manage to secure victory.
The INDIA Bloc and Fissures Amongst Opposition Parties
Smriti Irani also mentioned the INDIA bloc, stating that the “amalgamation” of political forces within it revealed evident fissures and fractures. She commented on the alliance among opposition parties with the objective of defeating Narendra Modi, asserting that this demonstrated Modi’s potential for re-election for a third term. She highlighted that multiple political forces were required to challenge his leadership.
Women’s Reservation Bill and Delimitation Process
When asked about the Women’s Reservation Bill, Irani explained that delimitation must occur first, a process that is set to take place in 2026 as per Article 82 of the Constitution. She claimed that the Congress introduced the Bill without outlining the implementation process. Irani alleged that the Congress, despite having the necessary numbers, left the Bill pending in the Lok Sabha for four years after it was passed by the Rajya Sabha.
BJP’s Legislation for Women’s Reservation
Irani contrasted the BJP’s legislation with the Congress’s proposal, stating that the BJP’s reservation would be available for 15 years, equivalent to three terms. She emphasized that the BJP did not leave it open-ended and that Article 82 of the Constitution should be read for more clarity.
