SKUAST-K KVK Shopian Launches Entrepreneurship Program: Focus on Dhingri Mushroom Cultivation for Rural Upliftment
SKUAST-K’s Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Shopian has kickstarted a week-long training program focused on Dhingri mushroom cultivation with the aim of fostering entrepreneurship and uplifting rural livelihoods. The initiative, titled “Entrepreneurship Development through Dhingri Mushroom Cultivation and Spawn Production,” is part of SKUAST-K’s ongoing efforts, generously sponsored by the Union Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME), Government of India.
The university officials highlighted that SKUAST-K is currently undertaking 550 skill development programs throughout Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, with a primary focus on empowering the youth with entrepreneurial skills. The Entrepreneurship-Mushroom Development Program (E-MDP) specifically targets the popularization of mushroom cultivation as a viable source of income for marginal farmers and rural youth.
Dr. Zaffar Afroz Badri, Senior Scientist, and Head of KVK Shopian enlightened the participants about the nutritional value of mushrooms. He emphasized that mushroom cultivation presents a lucrative opportunity for rural youth as an additional farming activity. Dr. Badri encouraged farmers to embrace mushroom cultivation, citing its remunerative nature and potential to generate additional employment opportunities.
Dr. Shabeer Ahmad Ganie, a scientist at KVK Shopian and the coordinator of the training program, provided a comprehensive overview of the course. He informed participants that the training would cover various aspects of mushroom cultivation, including harvesting, processing, value addition, marketing, spawn production, and disease and pest management. Practical sessions will be an integral part of the program, ensuring hands-on experience for the participants. This initiative underscores a broader commitment to equipping individuals in rural areas with skills that contribute not only to their income but also promote sustainable agricultural practices.
Mushroom cultivation, known for its relatively low input requirements and high returns, emerges as an attractive avenue for diversifying income sources in agricultural communities.
