SKUAST-K Establishes KESAR Cell for Agricultural Risk Management in Collaboration with AIC
The Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K) has recently established a research lab named the ‘Knowledge for Education and Sustainable Agriculture Risk Management (KESAR) Cell’ at its Shalimar campus. This collaborative initiative between SKUAST-K and the Agriculture Insurance Company of India Limited (AIC) aims to enhance research efforts and cooperation for mitigating risks in agricultural products.
The KESAR Cell is a result of joint efforts, with the collaboration focusing on various aspects such as academic and research cooperation, development of a post-graduate diploma program curriculum for Agri Stack, provision of internship opportunities for SKUAST-K students, expansion of Joint Research Programs, and the sharing of facilities between the two organizations.

The overarching goal of the KESAR Cell is to delve into research opportunities related to remote sensing and agriculture for both students and officials. The inauguration ceremony of the KESAR Cell at the Shalimar campus was led by Prof Nazir Ahmad, Vice Chancellor of SKUAST-K, and Girija Subramanian, Chairman and Managing Director of AIC. Speaking at the occasion, Prof Ganai emphasized that the KESAR Cell, as a joint effort with AIC, will not only benefit students by opening doors to explore opportunities like Agri Stack but will also contribute to risk management in agriculture, thereby benefiting the broader agricultural community.
Girija Subramanian, in her address, expressed AIC’s commitment to contributing to the knowledge development of students, particularly in agriculture, and developing technology-based solutions to support the farming community through the KESAR Cell initiative.During the inaugural ceremony, G Senthil Kumar, Regional Manager of AIC for Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, stated that the KESAR Cell would have a dedicated team working on innovation in the Kashmir region, with the aim of eventually extending these innovations to other parts of the country.
The event was attended by officials from both organizations, including Dr Shabir A Bangroo, Assistant Professor in the Department of Soil Science, Dr Naveed Hameed, CEO of SKUAST K Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship Centre, Kaiser G Rather, Assistant Manager at AIC of India, and MK Huddar, Administrative Officer from AIC of India. It is noteworthy that in February of the same year, AIC of India and SKUAST-Kashmir had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the objective of placing emphasis on developing Agri Stack and student internship programs.
The MoU signing took place at the International Education Fair 2023 organized by the University in New Delhi, with the presence of the Vice Chancellor of SKUAST Kashmir.
