In a devastating incident near Durbuk in Leh, at least six people, including two children, lost their lives on Thursday when a school bus skidded off the road and plunged into a deep gorge. The accident also left 22 others injured, many of them critically, officials reported.
The tragic accident occurred around 11:30 AM when the bus, belonging to Lamdon School in Leh, was en route from Leh to Durbuk.
For reasons still under investigation, the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and tumble into the gorge below.
District Magistrate Leh, Santosh Sukhadeva, confirmed the fatalities and the severity of the injuries. “Six persons died and 22 are injured, many of them critically.
They are being brought to Leh via chopper service,” Sukhadeva informed Rising Kashmir. Both the Army and District Hospital in Leh have been mobilized to provide urgent medical care to the injured.
The rescue operation commenced immediately after the accident, with authorities and local volunteers working tirelessly to assist the victims.
The critically injured are being airlifted to Leh, where they will receive urgent medical attention. The swift response included chopper services to transport the severely wounded to Leh’s medical facilities.
As the situation continues to unfold, authorities are focusing on providing medical care to the injured and investigating the cause of the accident.
