OfIndian Shooter Wins Bronze in 10m Air Pistol Event
On the first day of the 15th Asian Shooting Championship held in Changwon, Korea, India celebrated a significant victory. Sarabjot Singh clinched a bronze medal in the Men’s 10m Air Pistol event, earning India’s eighth quota place for the Paris 2024 Olympics in Shooting. This achievement marks the first quota in Pistol events for the country.
Brilliant Performance Leads to Quota Win
Sarabjot demonstrated his remarkable shooting skills throughout the competition, securing a place in the finals with a score of 581 in the qualification round. In the final round, he delivered a brilliant performance, shooting 221.1. This earned him a bronze medal and, more importantly, a quota place for the upcoming Olympics. Sarabjot was just behind two Chinese shooters, Zhang Yifan (gold, 243.7) and Liu Jinyao (silver, 242.1).
Overcoming the Competition
This achievement was particularly remarkable because China had already used up their two quotas in the event. With only one of the two eligible Koreans remaining, Sarabjot had to perform exceptionally well to secure the quota. He seized the lead after the first five shots, maintaining his composure as the two Chinese competitors caught up and eventually surpassed him, securing his place on the international podium.
Challenges in Women’s Air Pistol Event
In the Women’s Air Pistol event, none of the five Indian participants, even those competing for ranking points, were able to make it to the top eight. Rhythm Sangwan finished 11th (577), Esha Singh 13th (576), Surbhi Rao 15th (575), Ruchita Vinerkar 22nd (571), and Palak ended 25th (570).
The competition also saw performances from other Indian male shooters in the Men’s Air Pistol event. Varun Tomar (578) and Kunal Rana (577) secured the 16th and 17th positions, while Shiva (576) stood 20th, and Saurabh Chaudhary (569) finished in 35th place.
In addition to the senior events, the junior pistol events and the men’s and women’s Skeet qualifications were also part of the day’s competitions.
