In a resumption of hostilities, Russia fired a barrage of cruise missiles at Ukrainian targets, ending an almost 80-day pause, according to Ukrainian officials. The air raid in Kyiv lasted nearly two hours, but Ukrainian air defenses successfully intercepted all missiles heading towards the capital.

Despite this, some homes in Kyiv suffered damage from “downed enemy targets.” In Pavlohrad, a missile strike resulted in one fatality and four injuries. Additionally, strikes in the eastern Kharkiv region claimed one life and left several others injured, causing damage to residential buildings, apartments, and cars.

This marked the first such attack in over two months, with Western intelligence assessments warning of a potential escalation in Russia’s bombardment of civilian infrastructure during the winter.

Of the 19 missiles launched, 14 were reportedly destroyed in the Kyiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions. The missile barrage involved Tu-95MS strategic aircraft launching cruise missiles of the Kh-101/555/55 type from the Engels city area, Saratov region. The last significant cruise missile attack on Ukraine occurred on September 21.

Despite improved Ukrainian defenses this winter, Russia’s strikes were expected to be more sophisticated, combining missiles and drones, according to warnings from Ukraine’s Defence Intelligence Deputy Chief Vadym Skibitsky in November.
