Rajya Sabha Adjourned till 2 PM; Chairman Dhankhar Warns MPs for Disrupting Proceedings
The Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha sessions today were once again interrupted by disruptions and chaos, resulting in multiple adjournments and a contentious exchange between MPs. Shortly after resuming post-adjournment at 11.30 AM, Rajya Sabha got adjourned yet again until 2 PM due to opposition MPs raising slogans about the Parliament security breach incident.
Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, before adjourning the House, warned MPs Jebi Mather and Binoy Viswam against disrupting the proceedings. Simultaneously, Lok Sabha faced its share of uproar, leading to an early adjournment for the day amid a massive ruckus created by the opposition.
Expressing dismay over the situation, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla urged the opposition to abstain from disruptive actions, emphasizing the importance of dignified parliamentary conduct. Amidst the turmoil, Speaker Birla welcomed a Sri Lankan delegation led by Parliament Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana. Meanwhile, suspended MPs staged a protest on the Parliament’s stairs as Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi met them while entering the House.
Before the chaotic scenes unfolded, leaders of the opposition’s INDIA bloc gathered for a meeting ahead of the day’s session. The opposition members, including senior leaders Farooq Abdullah, Jairam Ramesh, Ramgopal Yadav, and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, strategized on cornering the Centre during discussions in both houses.
The primary demand of the opposition remains a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the recent security breach in which individuals entered the Lok Sabha with gas canisters, causing panic. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge reiterated the demand for Shah’s statement, stressing the seriousness of the issue.
In response, the BJP criticized the opposition for disrupting parliamentary proceedings. BJP MP Jagdambika Pal underscored the issue’s importance concerning Parliament’s security and Speaker Birla’s concerns. Meanwhile, BSP MP Malook Nagar urged the opposition to address the security incident in Parliament rather than creating disruptions, emphasizing the responsibility of both the ruling party and the opposition for the House’s smooth functioning.
