Rain-Related Incidents Claim 19 Lives in Uttar Pradesh.

LUCKNOW: Tragedy struck Uttar Pradesh as 19 lives were lost due to rain-related incidents over the past 24 hours, according to the state relief commissioner’s office. Among these fatalities, four were attributed to lightning strikes, while two resulted from drowning.

The affected districts include Hardoi, Barabanki, Pratapgarh, Kannauj, Amethi, Deoria, Jalaun, Kanpur, Unnao, Sambhal, Rampur, and Muzaffarnagar, each witnessing the loss of precious lives. The relentless downpours have disrupted normal life in central Uttar Pradesh since Sunday, exacerbating the situation. In the past 24 hours, 22 districts have experienced rainfall exceeding 40 mm, including Moradabad, Sambhal, Rampur, Hathras, Barabanki, Kasganj, Bijnor, Amroha, Bahraich, Lucknow, Badaun, Mainpuri, Hardoi, Firozabad, Bareilly, Shahjahanpur, Kanpur, Sitapur, Farrukhabad, Lakhimpur Kheri, and Fatehpur. These heavy rains have led to further casualties, with Hardoi and Kannauj being the hardest hit.

The meteorological department predicts that heavy rains will persist in the eastern region until September 14, while lighter showers will continue until September 17. Meanwhile, the western part of the state should expect rain until September 17, with a particular alert for lightning until September 15.

In response to the challenging conditions, schools in the state capital, Lucknow, have been ordered to remain closed for safety reasons. District Magistrate Surya Pal Gangwar has issued advisories urging people to avoid unnecessary travel due to the risk of severe lightning.

The relentless rains have disrupted not only daily life but also essential services. The movement of trains in Barabanki has been hampered due to water flooding the railway tracks. While trains were allowed to pass at a slow pace after a temporary halt, this has affected the transportation network.

The situation is further compounded by widespread waterlogging, which is being addressed as an urgent priority. Municipal Corporation teams in urban areas and sub-divisional magistrate-led teams in rural areas are working tirelessly to address citizens’ problems. They are also inspecting cow shelters and reviewing security measures.

While the region faces several challenges, efforts are ongoing to mitigate the situation. Officials are working to divert traffic in areas affected by road collapses, and assessments of crop damage are being conducted to provide compensation to affected farmers.Additionally, some districts are grappling with flooding, leading to the closure of schools and the postponement of exams. In Unnao, lightning strikes claimed the lives of 140 sheep in Hasanganj tehsil.

The relief commissioner’s office reports flood-related issues in ten districts, affecting 19 tehsils and 173 villages, impacting a population of 55,982. Relief efforts, including shelter homes, food distribution, and medical camps, are underway. While challenges persist, rivers are not currently flowing above the danger level, though the situation remains closely monitored. Ganga in Bijnor and Son river in Mirzapur (Bansagar dam)
