Rahul Gandhi’s Take on the India-Bharat Controversy.
New Delhi: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has offered his perspective on the recent speculation surrounding a potential change in India’s name to Bharat. While attending an event in France, he responded to the question of whether such a change holds any value. In a video shared by the Congress, Mr. Gandhi downplayed the significance of the name change, describing both “India” and “Bharat” as “perfectly acceptable.”
Constitutional Validity of Both Names Mr. Gandhi pointed out that the Indian Constitution itself refers to the country as both “India” and “Bharat.” He quoted the relevant passage: “India, that is, Bharat, shall be a Union of States.” He emphasized that there is no inherent problem with having two names for the nation and suggested that the government may be reacting to the fact that the opposition coalition, INDIA, adopted the name “INDIA.”
Tongue-in-Cheek Remarks In a light-hearted tone, Mr. Gandhi remarked, “I mean, you know how these things are… I mean, we could always give our coalition a second name as well… (but) I don’t think it will solve the purpose. But people act in strange ways!” He then posed the question back to the audience, asking for their thoughts on the matter. Mr. Gandhi also stressed the importance of ensuring that the voices of all people in the country are heard and respected.
The India-Bharat Controversy Unveiled.
The controversy surrounding the name change gained traction when invitations to G20 leaders referred to President Droupadi Murmu as the “President of Bharat” instead of India. The use of “Bharat” and its association as the “mother of democracy” in promotional materials for the summit triggered widespread backlash. This controversy emerged shortly after the opposition bloc, INDIA, announced its plans to contest elections together, accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of distorting history and dividing the nation.
Prime Minister Modi’s Response.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his disapproval of the opposition bloc’s name, INDIA, which stands for Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance. He referred to them as “Ghamandiya,” the Hindi word for ‘arrogant,’ and accused the Congress of changing its name “to hide how they schemed against the poor.” Additionally, senior BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma suggested that Rahul Gandhi should relinquish the “Gandhi” title, accusing him of attempting to break the country.
