PTI to Challenge Rejected Nomination Papers; Imran Khan’s Candidacy in Question
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) is set to challenge the rejection of numerous nomination papers, including that of party founder Imran Khan, by approaching election tribunals on Monday, as reported by Dawn. After a significant number of PTI nominees failed to pass the scrutiny for the 2024 general elections, the party’s Central Information Secretary Raoof Hasan confirmed that all rejected nomination papers would be contested, initiating the process through the tribunals in accordance with the stipulated rules.
PTI Central Punjab Additional General Secretary Sardar Azeemullah Khan highlighted that candidates were collecting certified copies of the ‘rejection decisions’ from respective Returning Officers (ROs) and would begin filing appeals with the appellate tribunals. Some candidates will pursue the appeals with the party’s assistance while others will engage private lawyers for their cases.
The Election Commission of Pakistan’s rejection of numerous PTI nomination forms nationwide led the former ruling party to prepare for challenging these decisions through appropriate channels. The PTI leaders criticized the ROs appointed from the civil bureaucracy, alleging their reluctance to exercise independent decision-making, seemingly awaiting instructions from higher authorities.
Highlighting a particular instance, PTI leaders referred to the NA-132 (Kasur-II) constituency where the RO initially included PTI candidate Muhammad Saleem in the list of validly nominated candidates, only to later issue a revised list excluding Saleem. Such instances have fueled PTI’s discontent with the nomination process.
Furthermore, PTI announced the launch of a ‘WhatsApp’ account to collect evidence related to alleged pre-poll rigging. The party urged individuals to share video and pictorial evidence of any such irregularities occurring in constituencies, seeking to gather data to support their claims.
Amidst these developments, Barrister Gohar Khan and Barrister Umair Khan Niazi are scheduled to meet Imran Khan in Adiala Jail to seek his approval for selecting party candidates and awarding tickets. The rejection of significant PTI nomination papers and the subsequent legal challenges hint at potential uncertainties looming over the party’s candidacies in the upcoming elections.
