In a significant setback to Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), known for its pro-India stance, achieved a decisive victory in the Mayoral election for the capital, Male.

MDP candidate Adam Azim secured a landslide win, succeeding Muizzu, who had recently resigned from the position to contest presidential elections.

The pro-China leader Muizzu faced low voter turnout, while Azim garnered 5,303 votes against the rival candidate’s 3,301.

MDP, led by former president Mohammad Solih, who has favorable ties with India, aims to revive its political standing following the victory.

The Maldives remains in a majority under the MDP in Parliament, potentially influencing national policies.

The election unfolded amid a diplomatic row with India triggered by derogatory comments posted by three deputy ministers from Muizzu’s government against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The incident led to concerns in India and raised calls for a tourist boycott. Muizzu, during a state visit to China, aimed to strengthen ties with Beijing, further highlighting the strategic dynamics in the region.
