Pilot Project Initiated by Authorities to Transform Dal-Lake Weeds into Fertilizer.image/representational
The picturesque Dal Lake in Jammu and Kashmir, known for its serene beauty, has been grappling with a green menace over the years – an incessant growth of weed, or macrophytes, which threatened to overwhelm the lake’s delicate ecosystem. In response to this challenge, the Lake Conservation and Management Authority (LCMA) has initiated a groundbreaking pilot project. The aim? To transform the massive quantities of weed extracted from Dal Lake into eco-friendly, organic fertilizer, all while generating revenue for the region. Here’s an insight into this revolutionary endeavor.
The Battle Against Overwhelming Weed Growth
Every year, nearly 70,000 cubic meters of weed are removed from Dal Lake, forming a vital component of the lake’s ecosystem. These macrophytes, once seen as a nuisance, are now at the center of a transformational initiative. Previously, this weed was discarded, causing environmental concerns and wastage. However, authorities have taken the decisive step to address this issue.Khurshid Ahmad Mir, Executive Engineer (Lake Cleaning and Monitoring Operations), expressed enthusiasm about this initiative, “This is a natural fertilizer. We get around 70,000 cubic meters of weed every year.

“A Collaborative Approach with NAFED
LCMA has partnered with the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) to convert this substantial weed harvest into organic fertilizer. By doing so, they aim to not only tackle the weed problem but also turn it into a valuable resource.Vice Chairman of the LCMA, Bashir Ahmad Bhat, explained, “To maintain the aesthetics and not let these macrophytes overwhelm the ecosystem, deweeding measures are taken.” Over the past two years, considerable effort has been put into the removal of weed to preserve the lake’s ecological balance.
Converting Weed into Organic Fertilizer
The process involves a variety of mechanisms, including composting the weed, to transform it into a marketable product. “It is a commercial exercise wherein this weed will be converted into manure, and subsequently based on the outcome of this pilot project, it will be made commercially available,” said Bashir Ahmad Bhat.Altaf Ahmad Bhat, responsible for the deweeding process, highlighted the environmental benefits of this approach, stating, “This fertilizer will be economical, as compared to the chemical fertilizers available in the market. It will be organic as it will be made through natural processes and will not have any ill effects.
From Waste to Revenue: A Win-Win Transformation
Owais Rashid, a junior engineer in the department, emphasized the broader impact of this project. He pointed out that while the weed used to be discarded as waste, it is now poised to become a source of revenue for the region, showing how innovative thinking can turn environmental challenges into opportunities.
In conclusion, the initiative to convert weed from Dal Lake into organic fertilizer is a remarkable step towards environmental sustainability and economic growth for the region. It reflects a proactive approach in managing natural resources and demonstrates how thoughtful solutions can benefit both the ecosystem and the local economy.
