PDP Suspends Political Activities for 7 Days in Solidarity with J&K Citizens after SC’s Article 370 Verdict
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) declared a week-long suspension of all political engagements to stand in unity with the people of Jammu and Kashmir following the recent Supreme Court verdict on Article 370. PDP President Mehbooba Mufti’s scheduled worker conventions and other political activities have been canceled in this context.
Syed Suhail Bukhari, PDP Chief Spokesperson, conveyed the decision, highlighting that it was made to support the populace in light of the Supreme Court’s ruling validating the Union Government’s 2019 decision to abrogate Article 370.
The apex court’s judgment upheld the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, emphasizing that Article 370 was a “temporary provision.”
The five-judge Constitution bench, led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, unanimously upheld the Union Government’s decision, emphasizing that challenging every decision taken by the Centre regarding a State could impede the state’s administration.
Addressing the provisional nature of Article 370, the court highlighted its historical context, pointing out that it was an interim measure due to wartime conditions in the State.
It clarified that the President holds the authority to declare Article 370 defunct, emphasizing that the provision was intended for Jammu and Kashmir’s constitutional integration with the Union, not disintegration.
Moreover, the Supreme Court directed the Election Commission to conduct Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections by September 30, 2024, while underscoring the restoration of the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir, which the Centre assured would occur soon.
