Omar Abdullah, a leader from the National Conference, voiced his disapproval on Monday regarding the release on bail of an Army captain who had been convicted by a general court-martial in connection to the 2020 Amshipora fake encounter case. Expressing concern, Abdullah urged the Central government not to undermine the gravity of the situation, emphasizing that the people of the region should not feel that their lives are undervalued.

Addressing reporters, Abdullah stated, “I want to appeal to the Centre not to play with the people here. Do not make the people here think that our blood is so cheap that a person found guilty of murder is enlarged on bail so easily.

” The Army captain in question, Captain Bhoopendra Singh, had been found guilty by the armed forces tribunal in Delhi for his involvement in a staged encounter in Amshipora village, where three men lost their lives in July 2020. The tribunal not only suspended Singh’s life sentence but also granted him conditional bail, instructing him to appear before its principal registrar monthly, starting from January of the following year.

Abdullah expressed his dismay at the apparent disparity in the legal treatment, highlighting, “Those arrested on minor charges do not get bail for years. On the other hand, an army officer who was, not by a civilian court but by an army court-martial, convicted on murder charges, in a fake encounter… got bail.”Turning his attention to the prolonged delay in holding elections in Jammu and Kashmir, Abdullah expressed hope that the Supreme Court would address the issue alongside its verdict on the Article 370 petitions.

. He recounted the Chief Justice’s previous statement that the matter was interconnected with Article 370 and would be decided accordingly.Expressing further concerns, Abdullah highlighted the alarming electricity supply situation in Kashmir, asserting that the power cuts faced by the people were unprecedented.

Criticizing the current administration, he questioned why, despite ample funds, the electricity system couldn’t be rectified. Abdullah asked, “The situation was not this bad during our tenure. Today, they say they have ample funds. Why don’t they make arrangements for electricity then? Why are people facing up to 12 hours of power cuts.
