North Korea Accelerates Military Preparations in Response to US Actions
According to Al Jazeera, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has directed the military, including the nuclear program, to hasten war preparations in response to what he deemed as unparalleled hostile actions by the United States.
This directive was issued during a meeting of the country’s ruling Workers’ Party, where Kim laid out tasks for the military, munitions industry, nuclear weapons, and civil defense sectors to expedite readiness.
The official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that Kim expressed concerns over the ‘extreme’ military situation on the Korean peninsula due to unprecedented confrontations between North Korea and the US.
Although the state news agency did not provide specific details about the preparations, Kim’s instructions were clear.
Amid Pyongyang’s record-breaking series of weapons tests, South Korea, Japan, and the United States have escalated political and defense cooperation.
Additionally, they’ve activated a system for real-time communication of data on North Korean missile launches.
The US deployed a nuclear-powered submarine to South Korea and conducted drills with Seoul and Tokyo using long-range bombers.
North Korea’s recent milestones include the successful launch of a military spy satellite, testing its most advanced intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), the Hwasong-18, and cementing nuclear power status in its constitution.
Talks on denuclearization stalled in 2019, leading to heightened sanctions after failed summits with former US President Donald Trump.
Despite UN sanctions since its first nuclear test in 2006, Pyongyang is strengthening ties with Moscow. Kim Jong Un’s visit to Russia in September and his inspection of military bases and weapons factories raised concerns about potential military cooperation between North Korea and Russia amid the Ukraine conflict.
