North India Braces Against Biting Cold and Dense Fog
The North Indian expanse continued to experience a firm grip of bone-chilling temperatures, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) recording minimum temperatures ranging from 7-10°C across multiple regions of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, and north Rajasthan on Saturday.
Similar temperatures persisted over Delhi, south Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh, painting a wintry morning for residents, according to the IMD.
A relentless cold wave enveloped significant parts of North India, shrouding cities in thick fog and prompting locals to seek solace around bonfires for warmth.
The frosty air witnessed residents’ breath billowing out, marking a chilling start to the day.
Various northern cities, including Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh, Jaipur, and the national capital, grappled with the icy grip of cold and dense fog on Saturday, disrupting normal activities.
The IMD’s satellite image at 8:30 am captured a blanket of thick fog draped over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, north Rajasthan, and north Madhya Pradesh.
The weather agency cautioned about the likelihood of “dense to very dense fog conditions” persisting in several areas of Uttar Pradesh, north Rajasthan, and Bihar on the morning of December 31.
Additionally, foggy conditions are anticipated in isolated pockets of various regions like Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Odisha, Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura during the specified dates.
Travellers in and out of the national capital faced disruptions due to the foggy conditions, encountering delays and diversions in several flights and trains.
Sources reported nearly 80 delayed flights at Delhi’s IGI Airport by 8:30 am on Saturday due to the prevailing weather conditions.
