NIA Registers Case Against Gurpatwant Singh Pannun for Threats Against Air India
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) of India has taken legal action against Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, identified as a ‘listed individual terrorist,’ following his recent viral video that threatened Air India passengers and the airline with a global blockade and closure of operations from November 19. The NIA filed charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.
Background of the Accused and His Actions
Pannun, who proclaims himself as the General Counsel of the banned group ‘Sikhs for Justice’ (SFJ), has been a controversial figure, especially after the release and circulation of his video messages on social media. In these messages, he urged Sikhs not to fly on Air India planes from November 19, claiming a threat to their lives. He also threatened to prevent Air India from operating globally.
Security Alert and Investigations
His assertions and threats have led to heightened security alerts and investigations by authorities in Canada, India, and other countries where Air India operates. In his video released on November 4, Pannun explicitly urged Sikhs to avoid flying with Air India and warned the Indian government of potential disruptions at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in New Delhi, one of the world’s busiest airports.
Promotion of Terror Acts and Disruption Attempts
Pannun is accused of promoting terror acts in India to revive terrorism. He has been creating a false narrative around the issues in Punjab and the Sikh religion, fostering enmity between Sikhs and other communities. His latest threats align with previous actions where he attempted to disrupt essential transportation and energy infrastructures in India.
Legal Actions and Bans Against SFJ and Pannun
The Ministry of Home Affairs banned SFJ as an ‘unlawful association’ under the UAPA in July 2019. Subsequently, in July 2020, Pannun was declared an ‘individual terrorist’ by the Indian government. The NIA has been monitoring him since 2019, and in September 2023, they confiscated his property in Amritsar and Chandigarh. Additionally, non-bailable warrants were issued against him in February 2021, and he was declared a ‘Proclaimed Offender’ in November 2022.
