NIA Charges Eight in Explosives and Equipment Supply to Naxals
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed charges against eight individuals for allegedly supplying explosives, drones, and other equipment to Naxal groups in India. These supplies were intended for attacks on security forces in Naxal-affected regions.
Details of the Arrest and Charges
Three of the accused, identified as Punem Nageswar Rao, Devanuri Mallikarjun Rao, and Vollepogula Umashankar, were arrested while transporting the explosives and other materials. They are charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act of 1967, and the Explosive Substances Act.
The Network and Supply Chain
Investigations revealed the involvement of Jannu Koti, Arepalli Srikanth, Tallapalli Arogyam, and Bontha Mahender in procuring and supplying the materials to the Naxals. The explosives were initially sourced from Sonaboina Kumaraswamy, a licensed dealer in explosives.
Purchases for Naxal Operations
The NIA discovered that the accused had purchased and supplied a drilling machine in March 2023 and a lathe machine in May 2023, intended for manufacturing arms for Naxal operations. A drone was also bought for spying on security force activities.
Intended Use of the Seized Materials
The materials seized from the accused at the time of their arrest were meant for the production of country-made arms to be used against security forces in Naxal-affected areas of India.
The case, originally registered at Cherla police station in Telangana, was taken over by the NIA on August 3.
