NIA Arrests Key Accused in Attari Border Heroin Smuggling Case
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) achieved a major breakthrough by apprehending a significant absconding suspect connected to the Attari border heroin smuggling case. Amritpal Singh, hailing from Punjab’s Tarn Taran district, was arrested by the NIA, becoming the third individual detained in case (RC-35/2022/NIA/DLI).
Amritpal’s role emerged during investigations as the handler of cash and the launderer of drug proceeds through banking and hawala channels, according to the NIA.
The case revolves around the seizure of 102.784 kg of heroin, valued at about Rs 700 crores, concealed within a Licorice roots (Mulethi) consignment.

The Indian Customs made the seizures on April 24th and 26th, 2022, when the narcotics entered India from Afghanistan via the Integrated Check Post Attari in Amritsar.Authorities apprehended Amritpal on December 12 while attempting to flee to Dubai from Amritsar International Airport, acting on a Look Out Circular (LOC) issued against him.
Investigations disclosed his involvement in an international drug nexus and his pivotal role as a conduit for circulating drug money to distributors in India and overseas.NIA’s searches at Amritpal’s premises in October led to the recovery of Rs 1,34,12,000 in cash, identified as drug proceeds.
He facilitated substantial transfers into the bank accounts of absconders Shahid Ahmed alias Qazi Abdul Wadood and Razi Haider Zaidi, acting on Shahid’s instructions.
The investigation revealed that the drug consignment was dispatched to India by Nazir Ahmed Qani, under the directions of Shahid Ahmed, to be distributed by Razi Haider Zaidi across the country for monetary gains.
The NIA, on December 16 last year, filed a chargesheet against Shahid Ahmed, Nazir Ahmed Qani, Razi Haider Zaidi, and Vipin Mittal.
While Mittal and Zaidi, Delhi residents, were arrested in August 2022, Shahid and Nazir, residing outside India, are absconding in the case.
The NIA’s relentless probe, initiated on the Ministry of Home Affairs’ directives, has shed light on the complex international drug network.
