Arrest and Custody
Founder and Editor-in-chief of Newsclick, Prabir Purkayastha, along with its Human Resources head Amit Chakravarty, have been sent to Delhi Police custody until November 2. They were arrested in a case filed under the anti-terror law UAPA on allegations of receiving funds for pro-China propaganda.
Judicial Custody and Police Custody
The pair had earlier been granted judicial custody for ten and five days by the same court. The Delhi Police sought nine more days of custodial remand to confront them with protected witnesses, examine devices, and extract data.
Opposition and Legal Argument
Prabir Purkayastha’s lawyer argued that the police should show the court what new evidence they have uncovered. He questioned the necessity of police custody, stating that if the police wanted to confront him with retrieved data, it could happen during judicial custody. The lawyer emphasized that there was no basis for the terrorism allegations.
Charges and Allegations
The Delhi Police’s Special Cell FIR alleges that Newsclick was used to peddle false narratives through paid news using illegally routed foreign funds. The FIR further claims that these actions were part of a conspiracy to disrupt India’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and security.
