- In anticipation of Cyclone Remal’s landfall between Bangladesh and West Bengal on Sunday midnight, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed 14 teams across the state. These teams are on standby to assist in rescue and relief operations as the cyclone intensifies over the Bay of Bengal.
The 14 NDRF teams have been strategically positioned in vulnerable areas across nine districts: Hooghly, Howrah, South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, Purba Medinipur, Paschim Medinipur, Kolkata, Murshidabad, and Nadia. The NDRF teams are equipped with boats, life jackets, and essential rescue equipment to respond to emergencies as Cyclone Remal makes landfall.
Early warnings from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) have prompted state and district administrations to evacuate residents to safer locations and cyclone shelters. The NDRF is closely coordinating with local authorities to ensure preparedness and effective response.
NDRF officials emphasized their readiness to handle any situation arising from the cyclone. “Our teams are trained and ready to ensure the safety and security of the residents of West Bengal,” an NDRF official stated.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting to review the response and preparedness for Cyclone Remal, highlighting the coordinated efforts at all levels of government. Local authorities have advised residents in vulnerable areas to evacuate and take necessary precautions. Shelters have been set up, and essential supplies are being stockpiled to support those who may be displaced by the storm.
Residents are urged to stay informed through official channels and follow safety advisories. Cyclone Remal is expected to hit with wind speeds of 110-120 kmph, gusting up to 135 kmph, around 11 pm on May 26 near Khepupara and Sagar Island. The IMD has issued warnings of extremely heavy rainfall in West Bengal’s coastal districts and northern Odisha on May 26 and 27. Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, and Tripura are also expected to experience heavy precipitation in the following days.
