Gul Claims Sixth Term, Tarigami Wins Fifth Straight Victory
National Conference (NC) veterans Abdul Rahim Rather and Ali Mohammad Sagar have won a historic seventh term in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly. The two leaders emerged victorious in the assembly polls, marking a significant achievement in their political careers.
Abdul Rahim Rather, a former finance minister, triumphed in the Chrar-i-Sharief constituency of central Budgam. He has represented this seat from 1977 until 2014, except for a single defeat in 2014 when he lost to PDP’s Ghulam Nabi Lone Hanjura. This time, Rather turned the tables, winning against Hanjura by a margin of 11,496 votes.
Ali Mohammad Sagar, another NC stalwart, also secured his seventh consecutive term. Sagar, a seasoned politician, defeated independent candidate Sheikh Imran by 9,912 votes, polling a total of 14,906 votes. Sagar, who first won the Batamaloo seat in 1983 at the age of 25, later shifted to the Khanyar constituency, where he has maintained his position for five straight terms since 1996.
Other experienced leaders also performed well in the polls. Mubarak Gul, former assembly speaker and NC leader, won his sixth term from Srinagar’s Eidgah constituency, securing 7,700 votes. Gul defeated independent rival Ghulam Nabi Bhat by 1,680 votes. Bhat polled 6,020 votes, while PDP’s Mohammad Khursheed Alam came third with 3,302 votes.
CPI(M) leader Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami clinched his fifth straight victory from Kulgam in south Kashmir, winning by 7,838 votes over independent candidate Sayar Ahmad Reshi. Tarigami polled 33,634 votes, while Reshi received 25,796 votes. Ten candidates contested the seat, with PDP’s Mohammad Amin Dar finishing third with 7,561 votes.
In contrast, PDP’s Abdul Rehman Bhat, who had represented Bijbehara for four terms, was defeated in his attempt for a fifth term. Bhat lost to NC’s Reyaz Ahmad Khan from the Shangus Anantnag East constituency, with Khan winning 30,345 votes to Bhat’s 14,532, a margin of 14,532 votes.
