The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has taken suo motu cognizance of a worker’s death at Jindal Steel and Power Limited’s steel plant in Chhattisgarh due to molten slag, a byproduct of steel manufacturing, falling on him. The NGT issued a notice to the company, raising concerns about possible non-compliance with environmental laws in the disposal process of slag.
Worker’s Tragic Death
The NGT initiated proceedings based on a news report published by PTI on August 22, 2023, highlighting the tragic incident of a worker’s death. Chini Lal Patel, a payload operator, suffered severe burns after molten slag from the furnace fell on him, resulting in his demise.
Environmental Compliance at the Center
The application filed with the NGT raised concerns about the handling and disposal of slag, indicating potential violations of environmental regulations during the steel manufacturing process. This prompted the NGT to investigate the matter further.
NGT’s Call for Compliance
In its order, the NGT emphasized the need to refer to guidelines prepared by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) for handling and managing slag generated from pyro-metallurgical operations in the iron and steel industries. The tribunal found it necessary to issue a notice to Jindal Steel and Power Limited, directing them to respond to the allegations and concerns raised in the application.
Transferring the Case for Further Action
The principal bench of the NGT decided that the case, pertaining to the Central Zone bench of the tribunal in Bhopal, should be transferred for “appropriate further action.” This decision ensures that the matter is thoroughly examined and addressed.
Upholding Environmental Laws and Safety
The NGT’s action underscores the importance of upholding environmental laws and safety measures within industrial processes. The tragic incident serves as a reminder of the need for strict compliance with regulations to prevent accidents and protect both workers and the environment.
