NaMo Bharat: India’s New Regional Rail Service to Transform Commuting

In an exciting development, the country’s inaugural semi-high-speed regional rail service, RapidX, has been rechristened as NaMo Bharat, just a day prior to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled inauguration of this groundbreaking train service. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) announced that PM Modi would be flagging off a RapidX train connecting the Sahibabad and Duhai Depot stations, signifying the launch of India’s Rapid Rail Transit System (RRTS).

The NaMo Bharat, formerly known as RapidX, represents a transformational regional development initiative aimed at revolutionizing intercity commuting in India. The service is designed to offer high-speed trains at intervals of just 15 minutes, and this frequency can be further increased to as little as five minutes based on demand, according to the PMO’s statement.

Inauguration and Opening of the Priority Section

The highly anticipated 17-kilometer priority section of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS Corridor is set to open for passengers on October 21, a day after its formal inauguration. This priority section, spanning from Sahibabad to the Duhai Depot, features five crucial stations: Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Guldhar, Duhai, and Duhai Depot. Safety is a paramount concern, and this modern train service incorporates various security measures, including CCTV cameras, an emergency door-opening mechanism, and a communication button to facilitate contact with the train operator.

A Regional Rail Service Redefining Travel

The RRTS corridor boasts impressive capabilities, with trains having the capacity to operate at speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour. However, officials indicate that the operational speed will be set at a lower rate.

Once the entire 82.15-kilometer Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS is fully operational, it is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Delhi and Meerut, potentially cutting it down to just 55 minutes from the current three to four hours required by road. The ambitious goal is to have the entire RRTS corridor operational by June 2025, heralding a new era of efficient and rapid intercity commuting for the people of India.
