Mother Loses All Four Quadruplets Soon After Birth in Jammu Kashmir

A profoundly tragic incident unfolded in Jammu and Kashmir, where a woman, Kalida Begum, gave birth to four babies in an extraordinary normal delivery. However, within just 12 hours of their miraculous birth, all four infants tragically lost their lives.

    Four Precious Lives Lost

Kalida Begum, who resides near Jammu and Kashmir’s Line of Control, welcomed her three boys and one girl into the world in the early hours of Monday at the government sub-district hospital in Kupwara, Jammu and Kashmir. Regrettably, all four infants, while born under unique circumstances, were premature and had low birth weights. Their delicate conditions necessitated immediate specialized care, such as that provided by a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Regrettably, this level of care was unavailable at the Kupwara sub-district hospital.

    Tragic Turn of Events

Earlier in the day, three of the quadruplets succumbed to their fragile health conditions at the Kupwara hospital. Subsequently, the sole surviving infant, a baby boy, along with the mother, were swiftly transported to a hospital in Srinagar to receive the urgently needed specialized care. Tragically, despite these efforts, the fourth baby also lost the battle for life after being transferred to Srinagar.

Inadequate Facilities for Maternal and Neonatal Care

The heart-wrenching incident has highlighted the stark lack of facilities and resources for maternal and neonatal care in the Kupwara sub-district hospital. Notably, this healthcare facility frequently encounters difficulties in addressing maternal and neonatal emergency care needs. Patients often require referrals to hospitals in Srinagar, which can entail lengthy journeys and potential delays in receiving critical medical care.

Officials Initially Reported Positive Health Outcomes

The initial reports from the Kupwara sub-district hospital following the birth of the quadruplets conveyed a more positive outlook, emphasizing the rarity of such cases. Dr. Mohammad Shafi, the medical superintendent of the hospital, reported that both the mother and her newborns were doing well.

The deeply tragic events that transpired cast a poignant spotlight on the need for improved healthcare facilities and accessibility to essential medical care, especially in regions where access to specialized care is limited.
