Mohammed Shami Stars as India Dominates Sri Lanka in World Cup Quarter-Final
In a World Cup quarter-final that mirrored the Asia Cup final, Mohammed Shami delivered a sensational performance to send India to the semi-finals with a resounding 302-run victory over Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium. Shami, along with fellow paceman Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, formed a formidable trio that decimated the Sri Lankan batting lineup.
Bumrah’s Early Strike and Shami’s ‘Miyaan Magic’
The Indian bowlers wasted no time making an impact, with Bumrah dismissing Pathum Nissanka for a golden duck on the very first ball of the match. Nissanka unsuccessfully reviewed the decision, and Bumrah’s delivery left him with no chance. In the following over, Mohammed Siraj sent Dimuth Karunaratne back for a golden duck with a delivery that trapped him in front of the stumps.
Shami’s Brilliant Spell
Sadeera Samarawickrama was the next to fall in the same over as he edged the ball to Shreyas Iyer. Shami continued to strike by dismissing skipper Kusal Mendis, celebrating with Cristiano Ronaldo’s ‘Siu’ celebration. Shami’s first over yielded two wickets, sending Charith Asalanka and Dushan Hemantha packing in back-to-back deliveries. His relentless spell continued, claiming his fourth victim with the wicket of Angelo Mathews.
The Finish Line in Sight
Dushmantha Chameera’s dismissal, caught brilliantly by KL Rahul behind the stumps, added to India’s dominance. Shami claimed his fifth wicket by dismissing Kasun Rajitha, sealing a remarkable five-for. Ravindra Jadeja took the final wicket to secure a convincing 302-run victory for India.
Power-Packed Indian Batting
In the first innings, Virat Kohli (88), Shreyas Iyer (82), and Shubman Gill (92) delivered exceptional performances, propelling India to a formidable total of 357/8. Although Dilshan Madhushanka took a five-wicket haul for Sri Lanka, it was insufficient to prevent India from posting a massive score.
India’s comprehensive victory places them in the semi-finals of the World Cup, and the team’s pace trio, including Shami, Bumrah, and Siraj, continues to make a formidable impact on the tournament.
