MILAN 24: Indian Navy’s Prestigious Multi-National Exercise to Commence in Visakhapatnam
The 12th edition of the Indian Navy’s renowned multi-national exercise, MILAN 24, is scheduled to be held in Visakhapatnam from February 19 to 27. This significant event, which was previously conducted under the Eastern Naval Command, is poised to foster camaraderie, cohesion, and collaboration among participating nations.
MILAN, a biennial naval exercise initiated in 1995 with four foreign countries—Indonesia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, and Thailand—aligns with India’s ‘Look East policy’. The exercise has evolved significantly and gained prominence under the aegis of the Andaman and Nicobar command until its 10th edition. Given its growing stature, the city of Visakhapatnam has been chosen as the preferred venue for future MILAN exercises.
Visakhapatnam boasts several advantages, including its status as a major commercial hub, a large port, and a coastal terrain suitable for ships to operate nearer the shore. The city’s extensive coastline, especially the picturesque RK Beach, along with its excellent infrastructure, offers an ideal setting for various planned MILAN events, such as Operational Demonstrations and the International City Parade, enhancing the experience for both participants and spectators.
The MILAN exercise will comprise two phases—the ‘harbour phase’ and the ‘sea phase’. The harbour phase, designed to foster cultural exchanges among participating nations, will include the International Maritime Seminar, International City Parade, Maritime Tech Exhibition, Subject Matter Expert Exchange, Milan of Young Officers, and diverse sporting events.
Transitioning to the Sea phase, this segment will witness the participation of ships, Maritime Patrol aircraft, and submarines from friendly foreign countries alongside the Indian Navy’s Aircraft Carriers and other units. Activities will encompass large-force manoeuvres, advanced air defence operations, anti-submarine warfare, and anti-surface operations, showcasing strategic naval capabilities.
The MILAN 24 exercise underscores India’s commitment to international cooperation and collective maritime security while providing an excellent platform for knowledge sharing and strengthening regional maritime partnerships.
