MEM Removes Shashi Tharoor from Palestine Solidarity Event
In a surprising turn of events, the Mahal Empowerment Mission (MEM), an organization representing Muslim Jamaaths in the state capital, has decided to exclude senior Congress leader and Thiruvananthapuram MP, Shashi Tharoor, from its upcoming Palestine solidarity event scheduled for October 30. This decision was taken following the controversy sparked by Mr. Tharoor’s recent statement at a Palestine solidarity rally organized by the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), where he referred to the October 7 attack on Israel as a “terrorist strike.”
MEM Takes a Firm Stand
MEM, which comprises Jamaaths from 100 wards within the city corporation, communicated its decision to Mr. Tharoor. MEM’s President, Shajahan Sreekaryam, confirmed the expulsion, signifying the organization’s commitment to its stance on the matter.
Tharoor Clarifies His Position
In the wake of the decision and facing a barrage of criticism on social media, Shashi Tharoor issued a clarification. He reaffirmed his unwavering support for the people of Palestine and distanced himself from the misinterpretation of a single sentence from his speech at the IUML rally.
The IUML, a prominent ally of the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in Kerala, recently organized a massive rally in northern Kozhikode. The event passionately denounced the reported indiscriminate killings of civilians, including women and children, in Gaza. Tens of thousands of IUML supporters participated in the Palestine Solidarity Human Rights rally, which was inaugurated by IUML leader Panakkad Syed Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal. Mr. Tharoor, the event’s chief guest, expressed his concern for innocent women and children who suffered casualties both in Israel and Gaza, emphasizing the urgent need to bring an end to the ongoing conflict.
In a clear and unequivocal manner, Mr. Tharoor also condemned the attack carried out by Hamas in Israel on October 7, categorizing it as an ‘act of terror.’
